How to Prioritize Yourself as a Mom

 

Being a mom is somehow one of the most rewarding and unforgiving jobs in the world. Moms are expected to completely devote themselves to their kids (which you want to, of course, because you love them).  However, you’re not going to do your best parenting if you’re feeling burnt out. It’s important to prioritize yourself in order to keep the mommy-machine (that’s you) running at full capacity.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Being a mom can feel like the most demanding job in the world sometimes—the old saying really is true: it takes a village to raise a child. It may feel like you’re meant to do everything yourself, but if that’s really the case, why have people been using that phrase for hundreds of years?

Don’t let your pride get in the way of asking for help—doing everything on your own is exhausting and not always necessary. Whether you spend most of your time around family, friends, or a combination of the two, your loved ones see how hard you’re working. 

You’d be surprised how willing people are to help (all you have to do is ask). Have your sister watch the kids for a half hour while you take a soothing shower, or ask your best friend to babysit while you attend a yoga class for stress relief

Asking for help can be awkward, but keep in mind that these people love you and your children. It’s not selfish to need a break once in a while, and the people in your life want what’s best for you. So, bite the bullet and make a little time for yourself!

Get Yourself a Hobby

While spending time with your family is always going to be a priority, you’ll want to find something you enjoy doing by yourself (even moms need an occasional breather). Whether it’s weightlifting, painting as a creative outlet, or hiking with friends, don’t let motherhood bury your own interests. 

Being a mom is a full-time job, but even full-time jobs give you breaks!

If you’re a mom who loves sticking to a schedule, get yourself a daily planner. This will help you pencil in times to enjoy your other hobbies, and maintain a healthy balance of family, work, and fun.

It All Starts with You

You can’t take care of others if you’re not taking care of yourself. If you’re feeling anxious, tired, or simply spread too thin—take a moment and figure out what’s going on. Being a mom is basically like being a superhero, but it doesn’t mean you’re invincible. Make sure to check in with yourself now and again—and if you need a little break, go ahead and take it.
