What a difference a decade makes. 10 years ago, I began a journey of self-discovery and like all journeys, it was fraught with unbridled joy and unimaginable pain. .See 10 years ago I was in the hospital with a very serious respiratory infection. Doctors pumped me full of steroids and antibiotics to get my lungs functioning properly again. When I left the hospital 3 days later, I was a wreck but that didn’t stop me from going into the city to get my hair relaxed as had been my routine every 5 weeks or so.. because #NewGrowth eeek!.Only this time was different. This time, the relaxer counteracted with the medication already in my body and my hair, already weakened from chemicals and heat, couldn’t take it anymore. So it broke off and fell out (we’ll show you, bitch!)!.At that moment I made a decision; I was never going to put another #relaxer in my hair, even if it meant never having another TV job (there were not a lot of natural women on TV and very definitely not in #TVnews). So I went about learning everything about my natural hair, which I had not seen since the 10th grade, 3 decades earlier. .And I learned to love her. I learned that, contrary to what I thought, my natural DOES grow… A LOT! I learned that this hair fits my personality better than any other. And I learned that loving me, ALL of me, made me exude a #peace and #joy that opened up jobs that weren’t necessarily available to me before. But it was also important for me to model for my #daughter what loving myself, all of me, looked like. .So here we’re are a decade later. I’ve learned a lot, had to switch up some things (thanks #hormones, you assholes) but my hair is still as healthy, strong and unruly as ever. Just like me. And I couldn’t love it any more! .P.S. is it just me or am I starting to look like my sweet lil’ mama?!?#nolyenodye #naturalHair #TeamNatural #LifeLessons #BigChop #Mom #momlife #Growth #Instagood #truth

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
