3 Things You will LOVE About Kinky Boots
On Broadway (TICKET DISCOUNT INSIDE!)

(I was given tickets in exchange for an honest review of Kinky Boots)

Broadway fans, listen up! Have I got a deal for you!

The other night my daughter Casey and I had a chance to see the totally fun, funny, entertaining and engaging Kinky Boots on Broadway!

Casey in line at Kinky Boots

While it was all of those things, there were also lessons to be learned, namely one of acceptance. Okay so  here are the 3 things you will absolutely LOVE about Kinky Boots!

THE MEN

Kinky Boots tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two men who actually are more similar than they are different.

Aaron C Finley as Charlie Price

Aaron C. Finley plays Charlie Price, the son of a shoemaker in Northern England. Upon his father’s sudden death, Charlie inherits the failing factory. Only that is the last thing he wants to do. He dreams of a cosmopolitan life with his girlfriend, (soon-to-be-wife) in London.

But as we know, life is not what we plan, it’s what we lead and that leads Charlie right back to where he started. And the place  he doesn’t want to be.

One night, through a series of unfortunate events, Charlie meets Lola, a drag performer, and a friendship is formed. Charlie’s failing factory is saved because he decides (after much persuasion) to make boots strong enough to withstand the weight and performance of drag queens.

It turns out to be a beautiful and ultimately mutually, beneficial project.

Lola is played by the sensational Todrick Hall, who hails from North Texas and draws on that experience to bring Lola to life.

A big, funny, FABULOUS life!

Todrick is, AH-MAZING! His timing, facial expressions and feeling have you sitting on the edge of your seat.. experiencing all the feels as Lola navigates a new job (designer of the Kinky Boots) in a small, somewhat closed-minded town.

THE MUSIC

The music…

THE MUSIC!

Kinky Boots was adapted from the book by Harvey Fierstein who then asked his friend Cyndi Lauper to do the music. She agreed and makes her debut as a musical theatre songwriter with this project. While I don’t know much about the mechanics and machinations.. I do know the music, the story and the choreography (Jerry Mitchell) will run you through the gamut of emotion. One song in particular, Not My father’s Son, a duet by Charlie and Lola (now dressed as Simon) is particularly heart-wrenching.

THE MESSAGE:

Casey and I cried. And between the tears, we laughed. Then we cried some more. You cannot be a part of this musical (and I say be a part of because you WILL be swaying in your seat) without feeling deep inside, the message behind the music.

From the very first, Ladies, Gentlemen and those who have yet to decide.” you will get why this is important. Kinky Boots, while thoroughly entertaining, carries with it, a very serious message” You change the world when you change your mind.

We get a chance to see hardcore factory workers, manly, nacho types, understand and ultimately accept this message.

The end..

The END is nothing short of beautiful.

I HIGHLY recommend Kinky Boots! It is an amazing piece of work, wonderfully put together with a powerful message. And while you’re here, make sure you take a picture with the cut out so you, too, can be Lola!

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
