Southside With You
Hey now.. looking for some fun weekend entertainment? How about a good, old fashioned love story on the big screen?
If that is your style and pace then you need to beat feet to the theatre to see Roadside Attractions newest film, Southside With You.
The adorable movie tells the story of President (before he was president) Barack Obama’s date with his now wife, Michelle. It is inspired by the Obama’s first date that summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama (played by Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson (played by Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.
Yes, that’s correct: I was on a call with John Legend..
Ms. Rene: Yes, hi, John. This question is for you. This is really not a big budget film, rather a smaller more intimate and evenly paced type of film. How do you think audiences will respond to that?
Mr. John Legend: It didn’t cost us a lot to make this film, so it’s not about trying to beat Suicide Squad. It’s about giving something special to the audience, giving something different to the audience. There’s so many people that will be inspired by this film, no matter their political stripe, no matter if they’re a fan of the Obamas for they’re not. I think it’s really simply a really subtle, sweet date movie. You get to see a really famous couple go on their first date, and so tastefully done. You get the intimacy, the back and forth, the rapport that they’re starting to develop. You see can that in it’s infancy, and why I think it’s a special, special film.
On a personal note, as a woman of color, it is important for me to see good, positive role models in mainstream media. This is not a film about politics; it’s about connecting with another human on a level so deep that it surprises even you. The kind of feeling you never want to end.
So if you’re looking for a sweet story, one that will make you smile (and sometimes cringe at the awkwardness of a first date) this is the one for you. Opens today, August 26th, 2016.. So grab your favorite date and head out to see Southside With You!
