Low cost or free attractions and rest areas near road-ways in near cities are plentiful. Driving along the coast, you can stop along any beach (many are free) and have a picnic lunch. Many cities and towns have free concerts in the parks series, as well as neighborhood festivals. What a great way to immerse yourself in the character of a place by being exposed to that towns music, food, arts and crafts, sporting events, parades and shopping. Museums offer free admission on select days. Think about a cross-country road trip along famous freeway routes, such as Route 66 and the Pacific Coast Highway. Not only will the natural beauty astound you, but the myriad small towns will captivate you with their charm.
