 GEMs Of Beauty:
Soaking Away

While you’re counting the days till Valentine’s chocolates appear on your pillow, and you’re wondering when the dreary cold days of winter will go away (okay, if you live in a more temperate climate, you can still sympathize with those of us who am trudging through slush), it’s time for a nice long shower or soak in the tub. I like to make my own aromatherapy haven in the bathroom with scented candles, dim lighting, some soothing music, and a wonderful bath product to make the madness go away, even if only for a few minutes. I hope these suggestions will do the same for you:

Elemis Frangipani Body Indulgence

gem-feb-elemis

When you’ve got the winter blahs and are dreaming of endless beaches, give yourself a bath-time stay-cation with the Tahitian monoi and Frangipani line from Elemis. They smell just like a heavenly tropical garden and are extra-soothing for your skin. This kit contains a Shower Cream, Body Oil, and Body Cream.

Ren Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil

Another heavenly scented product is this concentrated oil, which not only as fragrant as a room full of blooms, but super-nourishing thanks to its palmarosa, sesame, and geranium bio extracts.

Kneipp Bath Oils

Sebastian Kneipp was born in 1821 and claimed to have cured his tuberculosis—then inevitably fatal—with hydrotherapy. He became a naturopath and the German company that bears his name makes some of the best bath oils and salts I’ve ever used. Try the Arnica Joint & Muscle bath oil when you’re sore; the Eucalyptus for Cold & Sinus Relief; the Valerian and Hops for Deep Sleep; or my son’s favorite, Stress-Free, which turns the water bright orange.

Tocca Nourishing Body Scrub

Just as you need to regularly exfoliate your face and neck to get rid of the dead skin cells that make your complexion dull and blah, so do you need to exfoliate the rest of your body. It’s easy to do that in the shower of bath, especially with Tocca’s sugar-based scrubs with olive, safflower, and grapeseed oils that leave your skin refreshed and smooth. There are 5 different scents, and my favorites are Bianca (Green Tea and Lemon) and Stella (Italian Blood Orange).

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing
Moisture Milk

Bath-time isn’t just about your body, of course—don’t forget about your hair! I adore this ultra-hydrating leave-in conditioning spray, especially as your hair needs all the extra help it can get when it’s super-dry and brittle during the winter months. Just spray it on clean, towel-dried hair, feel how silky and supple your hair is, and you’re good to go.

If you love scented bath products as much as I do, it’s very easy (and very inexpensive) to make them at home using essential oils. These are highly concentrated essences with therapeutic properties and should never be put directly on skin—just add a few drops to a neutral oil like grapeseed or jojoba and pour it in the bath. You’ll find essential oils and supplies like small glass bottles with droppers at your local health food store or at reputable websites like www.doterra.com or www.rockymountainoils.com. The oils should be organic whenever possible and sourced from the countries around the world where the plants are indigenous.

Bonus Item: Fig + Yarrow Herbal Stream

gem-feb-fig

Fig + Yarrow have come up with a truly unique item that will stream away your stress. They’ve created herbal steam packets that are great for your skin and especially for deep cleaning your pores. Simply place the herbs in a large shallow bowl, cover with boiling water, and make a steam tent with a towel draped over your head for 5-15 minutes. You can do this at a table but I think it’s easier and less messy when you do it in the bath. When you’re done, strain the mixture and use the tea in your bathwater next time.

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
