Monday Morning Motivation:
3 Reasons You Need A Side Hustle
(And How To Get Started)

Happy Monday everyone… just a few more of these before 2015 rolls around.. are you ready for THAT?

So many of you know that I used to work in traditional media; for 20 years I was a news anchor, the last 4 1/2 I spent as co-host of The Early Show. In 2006, right after I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy due to family history of breast cancer and my own breast disease, I got fired from that high-profile gig.

But this is not a tale of woe… It’s a tale of WHOA!

See, even before my world was turned upside down, I had an idea. I wanted to write a book about my life as a mother and my philosophy of imperfect parenting. I told a friend of mine about it and she asked me, “Why do you want to do that? You already have a job.”

Yes. At that time I did have a job and it was a good paying one too.  But I also knew it was a bad idea to allow one person, entity or employer to have the power to radically change my life.

Of course, that’s what happened when I was fired in 2006.

But when the curtains closed on that act of my career, I already had the groundwork in place for the next; Good Enough Mother; The Perfectly Imperfect Book of Parenting was at the publisher.

A few years later, the friend who asked me why I was doing what I was in light of the fact that I already had a good job, told me she got it.. she finally understood why I was branding myself before I needed to (though I would argue now, we ALL need to be branding ourselves, even from the very beginning).

So to that end, here are the 3 reasons you need a side hustle and how to get started!

1. You Need To Prepare For Job Loss

Of course, this is the biggest reason of all. No one wants to think it could happen to them. Guess what? It can. And it does. What you don't want to do is wake up the morning after you've lost your job wondering what you're going to do with the rest of your life. Get started now.

HOW TO DO IT: Identify your passion. I knew I always wanted to write a book. So long before I lost my job, I was writing manuscripts and shopping my book idea. You don't have the second act fully formed but at least start identifying what you want it to be.
