Being compassionate requires that you take a good look at the sufferings and problems of other people, but it’s not about feeling pity or sorry for someone. It goes much deeper than that. True compassion requires that one not only recognize suffering, but also do something altruistic to help alleviate it. One who practices compassion never fails to invite joy and fulfillment into her life. Need to build your capacity for compassion? Follow one, two, or all of these steps and watch yours blossom.

2. Imagine Someone Else’s Pain

We all know a relative or friend who is going through a tough time. It could be a financial hardship or having to care for a child with a long-term illness. Imagine what that person is thinking and feeling. Put as much detail into the imagining as you can. What’s different about that person’s life? What are some of the ways that person has to change her lifestyle?
