Moms Must Read:
5 Books To Beat The Winter Blahs

It’s winter! Snowball fights, snowmen, sledding, and hot chocolate (with mini marshmallows!) are in order. So are days of school closures and kids needing to be kept busy during the day while they’re home.

In the winter there’s nothing better than snuggling up with your little ones and sharing a good winter read. Here are five  you might enjoy.

1. CLEO IN THE SNOW
BY CAROLINE MOCKFORD

Cleo in the Snow

Here’s a sweet little tale of a cat (who shares the same name as mine) and her young canine friend as they discover the delight of snowflakes and the fun of winter.  “This storybook is ideal for teaching the concepts of weather and the seasons, and encourages children to enjoy outdoor play.”

Who doesn’t love the idea of cats and dogs frolicking in the snow?

2. COLD SNAP BY
EILEEN SPINELLI

coldsnap

If you’re not familiar with Eileen Spinelli then you’re missing out. One of my favorites of hers is Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch, an endearing Valentines Day picture book.  Cold Snap takes place

in the town of Toby Mills. The thermometer is sinking toward zero, and the icicle hanging from the nose of General Toby’s statue is growing closer to the ground. The newspaper headline reads “COLD SNAP!” The people of the town are losing hope—and the feeling in their toes—until the mayor’s wife saves the day with a toasty treat.

I sure hope the toasty treat is hot chocolate with mini marshmallows!

3. BEAR SNORES ON
BY KARMA WILSON

bear snores on

Karma Wilson is on to something: books about a bear who snores, feels sick, or looses a tooth.  In Bear Snores On, he practically sleeps through a whole party!

One by one, a whole host of different animals and birds find their way out of the cold and into Bear’s cave to warm up. But even after the tea has been brewed and the corn has been popped, Bear just snores on!
See what happens when he finally wakes up and finds his cave full of uninvited guests — all of them having a party without him!

Be prepared to read this book over and over. And over.

4.  THE SNOWMAN
BY RAYMOND BRIGGS

If you’ve ever wanted to add a wordless book to your collection, here’s the one to add.  The Snowman by Raymond Briggs contains beautifully magical illustrations to correspond to the magic that the boy and the snowman share.  Why not expand the experience and make a snowman outside or create your own illustrations inspired by Briggs’s?

5.  THE SNOWY DAY
BY EZRA JACK KEATS

snowyday

I never tire of sharing The Snowy Day with my littles.  Little readers will delight in sharing the anticipation of getting ready to go outside to play in the snow, and making snow prints and making snow angels, and all the wonders of playing in the snow.  It’s pure delight! Wait, I think I’m going to go read it again…

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
