Good Enough Mother And GMC:
A Match Made In The Mountains (VIDEO)

I’ve never really been much of a car person; they were things that got me from point A to point B. There was a time I worried about that journey being stylish. Now, as the mother of two teens, two cats and a big Yellow Lab, I still like style but let’s be honest; functionality reigns supreme. Many of you who follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram know all about my travels up and down I-95 with said menagerie in tow.

The thing is (and I’ve said it before), we are big people; even my little people are big; bigger than me, in fact, much to my chagrin. So we need a car built for space and comfort; if it’s stylish too, well that’s a bonus.

A few years ago, I bought my first American-made car, a GMC Yukon XL and fell in love. It’s got great features, creature comforts and it’s roomy (hey, I told you we were big people).

Sadly, it’s also filled with dog hair, fast food wrappers and has thousands and thousands of miles on it.

So when the folks at GMC asked me to take a trip out west to test drive the Yukon XL Denali, the Terrain Denali and the Acadia Denali (pretty ones. Read: not filled with dog hair and fast food wrappers) as part of the Denali Dream Drive, how could I possibly say no?

But that was just one of the highlights; not only did we get to drive the vehicles through the beautiful mountains of South Lake Tahoe, we took them right on up to the  doorstep of the 2014 HGTV Dream Home in the Schaffer’s Mill near Truckee, CA. The cars were cool, the house was beautiful, the scenery, breathtaking plus there was one really big a bonus from the trip for me.

Well here, hop in back, put your seat belt on and I’ll take you for a spin..

I was fortunate enough to be among roughly 10 bloggers to take part in the Denali Dream Drive. Not sure if you know, but I started my TV news career in Reno, Nevada. I have a lot of fond memories of this part of the country, including these amazing sunsets. Here was one I snapped on the way from the airport in Reno to Tahoe using my iPhone.

NOW WE’RE TALKIN’! As you know with my job as host of Sweet Retreats, I travel quite a bit. I’ve stayed in some pretty swanky hotels too. But anyone that greets me with Champagne and cookies gets an A in my book. Well done, Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort. Well done.

After a lovely meal the first night, we were up and at ’em early the next day. Hey, we had to get wheels on pavement! So the bloggers were divided up into groups and each assigned a vehicle. But before we got on the road, I had to snap my photo with the the always fabulous GMC Communications Director, Jocelyn Allen.

We made it! It was a beautiful day for a spin through the mountains. Not long after we left,  we arrived Schaffer’s Mill, near Truckee, California, the site of this year’s HGTV Dream Home. From left to right Dan Koday, Liz Marie Galvan, Brittany Bailey Walls, Odette Jimenez, Chelsea McDonnough, Jeff Fortson, Larry Knox, Jr (Yukon/Yukon XL product manager), Rhoda Vickers, Dawj Sangster. Here’s Larry Knox, Jr giving us the (partial) lowdown on the Yukon.

Other things that made my eyes glaze over? Multiple USB ports and power outlets throughout the car (happy dance!) and did I mention space? The Yukon XL with its 3 rows of seating can fit 8 comfortably.. or  two kids who don’t want to touch each other. Ever. Leather throughout, heated seats and a boatload of safety features help make this the most popular selling Yukon.

That’s more about my future car (hey, gotta name it to claim it); tomorrow I’ll take you inside the HGTV Dream Home. And hey, don’t forget to enter to win a new 2015 GMC Yukon Denali and the 2014 HGTV Dream Home today through February 14th, 2014!
