Monday Morning Motivation:
Keep Walking! It’s a Journey, Not A Destination..
Hola and happy Monday everyone! I’m checking in from the road again; this time, headed to Park City, Utah to tape an episode of Sweet Retreats. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where I’ll show you some incredible and COLD scenery!
As many of you know, I live in New York but this winter’s been a bit of a (blessedly) slow build. Because the temperatures have been somewhat mild, I haven’t had to pull out my warm weather gear just yet. Even if I had, it wouldn’t be warm enough for Park City where the predicted highs this week are going to be in the low teens! So off I went to grab a few warm pieces to stave off frostbite.
While in the store, I struck up a conversation with a young saleswoman. She told me she has graduated from college and was in graduate school. A creative sort, she mentioned that what she really wants to do is shoot documentaries.
“Wow.. it must be so great to have arrived. To have so much time and so many projects under your belt and really know where you’re going.” She was so young, fresh and sincere.. so I tried to let her down easily.

“Well, you never REALLY arrive. You get closer to a goal but then that changes. If it does not, you stagnate.”
The look in her eyes said she understood but I don’t think that was the answer she was looking to have, leaning over the cash register on a busy Sunday afternoon.
I wasn’t trying to discourage as much as I was trying to prepare her and to an extent, reinforce it to myself.
2013 was a big year for us here at GEM; we added a bunch of contributors, shifted a few roles and streamlined the general operation. We partnered with some great brands and more are coming. But for as good as 2013 was, there were things that evolved because the goals were different.
The takeaway for her, for you and even me, is that your life/career are less of a destination and more of a moving target. You make plans and then move in that direction. Then, just when you think you have it all figured out, BOOM! things change. Circumstances change. Your goals change.
And you better be ready to change right on with them.
So how are you with change? Do you ever feel like you will “arrive”?
