The HGTV Dream Home
And The 2015 Yukon Denali
Good Enough Mother:
The Fun And Fantasy Of The Family Car
There was a time, not long ago, when a little red sports car revved my engine.
Now? A car that has multiple USB ports and a place for my handbag makes me weak in the knees.
Ahhh yes, the family car.. what goes into deciding the one that is right for you? Well, for us, it came down to money and size.
A few years back, my family discovered a love of road trips. That was fostered in part by a hatred of the high cost of airfare. So when Casey and Cole were little, we would place our sleeping bundles in the back of our fancy, European-manufactured SUV.
Years later, we added a dog (and 2 cats, until they urinated on stuff mid-trip. They never came with us again) and Casey and Cole each added about 4 and 6 inches respectively. That meant the small, expensive European manufactured SUV was a no go.
Knowing the kids each had a few more inches in them, I bought my first American made car about three years ago; a gently-used GMC Yukon XL. That’s when I wondered where it had been all my life.
It wasn’t the fanciest one on the lot, but it was marked down and it had space, both things that were appealing to me.
That car and I have been through a lot; up and down I-95 on long road trips, more school car lines than I care to recall and at one time, my office, when there was no power at home due to one of the many storms that have hit the East coast over the last couple of years.
In short, I love my Yukon for the reasons listed above but also because they are making cars with women/mothers like me in mind.
So when I was invited by the folks at GMC to come drive the 2015 Denali through Northern California, how COULD I refuse?
But it’s not just the car that is the star of the show. We’re going drive to the HGTV Dream Home in Lake Tahoe!
That’s right.. we’re going to get a first-hand look at the 2014 Dream home and it’s a beauty!
Then watch me go home and beg Buff to buy one.
No. For real.
Question for you.. what’s your family car and what went into your decision to buy that one?
(Disclosure: GM paid for me to head out west to take part in the 2015 Denali Dream Drive; of course, all unvarnished opinions are my own)
