10 Ways To MAKE Your Own Luck

When we hear the phrase “The luck of the Irish,” we think, hey, that’s a good thing. But, did you know that it used to imply very bad luck? When the Irish arrived in America, they were despised and treated badly (on top of decades of struggle in their own country). Yet, many were able to find their luck during the California gold rush, thanks to persistence and hard work.  Talk about turning a bad thing into a good thing! Luck isn’t something that happens to only a select few. How can each of us create our own fortune? Well, you’re in luck; we’ve got answers!

1. BE OPEN TO OPPORTUNITIES

You know how people say they were in the right place at the right time? Actually, they were in the right state of mind. Lucky people have a heightened sense of the world around them. They notice things that might escape others and almost always expect the unexpected. We all receive chance opportunities every day, but we walk right by them because we’re consumed with other things. Resolve to take a few moments to notice the sights, sounds, and smells of any space you occupy. See what there is to see rather than just what you’re looking for.

2. LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCTS

It seems crazy to listen to something without empirical evidence, especially when everything on the outside points to your gut being wrong. You should practice following your hunches. This works best when you understand why you instinctively feel the way you do about people or situations, so self-reflection is in order. The payoff is that a well-trained sense of intuition almost always takes you down the right path. And even if it doesn’t, it’s better to be wrong sometimes than to second-guess yourself all the time.

3. HAVE GOALS AND ACT ON THEM

If you want to improve your luck in relationships, wealth, school — whatever your heart desires — know exactly what you want to change and write it down where you will see it and refer to it throughout the day. Then take action. Every evening, I write down goals for the next day. Every daily goal leads to a bigger goal. For example, I want to be financially solvent in one year. One of the ways to improve my finances is to bring in more money through my writing. I write something every day and do research on writing. Since I made daily goals a priority three months ago, writing opportunities have come along that have given me income that I didn’t have then.

4. BE PERSISTENT

Think of a celebrity whose success you just don’t understand. Maybe she’s not the best singer or his acting skills are subpar. Yet, she keeps getting shows, jobs, and adulation heaped upon her. That’s not just dumb luck; these people persisted in the face of rejection. Even in the case of an “overnight success”, the celebrity heard the word no many times and didn’t let that get in the way of making her own luck. Believe in whatever it is you’re doing and keep working until the end.

5. EXPECT TO GET LUCKY

This doesn’t mean that you will be lucky 100% of the time. An expectation of luck means that you’ve placed yourself in a positive frame of mind that is open to everything. If you’re constantly thinking and saying things like, “I never find a good parking space,” “My boss won’t recognize my worth,” or “My husband is going to leave his dirty socks on the floor again,” then you have closed off an opportunity to have things work out differently. Be positive in your approach to the world.

6. RELAX

You know it’s necessary to recharge your batteries from time to time, but you should relax for another reason: to increase your luck. It’s no secret that tense or stressed people aren’t relaxed. Unlucky people tend to experience more anxiety than lucky people. That anxiety keeps the unlucky ones from noticing opportunities. Get plenty of rest and find an effective way to deal with stressors.

7. TURN BAD LUCK INTO GOOD LUCK

It’s just a simple fact of life that bad things happen to everybody. The difference is that lucky people don’t wallow in their misfortune. They know that things could have been worse and are grateful they weren’t. They take control of their lives and look for ways to move forward. When bad things happen, they believe things will eventually work out for them.

8. BE FLEXIBLE

Let’s suppose you want to get lucky in a romantic relationship. You have a list of all the qualities your perfect man must have. He should be handsome, rich, smart, bring you flowers every week, take you on vacation twice a year, and the list goes on and on. The longer the list, the less flexible you are. Try the approach of having one or two must-haves  and notice how that opens you up to meeting someone who will enhance your life.

9. CREATE GOOD KARMA

At the risk of sounding incredibly cheesy, I’m going to say that to create good luck, it helps to be a good person. Acts of kindness and grace do come back around to you, especially if you’re not just behaving well because of how it will benefit you later. Doing good will make you feel more positive, thereby increasing your chances of being open to opportunities and being in the right place at the right time.

 10. UNDERSTAND CHANCE VS. LUCK

When a person wins the lottery, she might attribute her winning to luck, but that’s just not the case. The lottery is random so if you buy a ticket, you have an equal (though small) chance of winning. You have no control over the outcome and lack of control runs counter to everything you just read. When a person experiences good luck all the time, it’s because of actions she’s taking. She’s not waiting for her ship to come in—she’s swimming out to it.
