Monday Morning Motivation:
There Is No Easy Way!
4 Reasons You Should Stop Looking For One

Hey all! Happy Monday to you!

So we’re back in the swing of things, bringing you our regular Monday Morning Motivation after taking last Monday to enjoy Labor Day. But we’re back and off to the races!

I was talking with a friend the other day just about how hard we were working and how it doesn’t look like it’s going to ease up anytime in the near future (side note: I am ALWAYS writing; if not on paper, in my head, which means most of the conversations I have with people will somehow, make their way into blog posts). At any rate, we were just talking about how much there was yet to do, what was involved with putting a career back together and building a brand when it hit me.

There is no easy way.

Repeat after me.

There is no easy way. You are going to have to put in the work, plain and simple. There are no shortcuts, no overnight success, no career fairy godmother.

You are going to do this.

You have to save yourself.

So for today’s Monday Morning Motivation, here are 4 reasons you should stop looking for a shortcut.

IT DOESN’T EXIST

August hair

I don’t care whether you’re talking career, weight loss, hair growth, whatever it is, there just isn’t really a way to get lasting, solid results by shaving off corners.

I mention hair growth and that’s a perfect example. I have documented my hair journey for the last several years, as many of you know. You may or may not know that hair grows, on average, 1/4 to 1/2 an inch each month. Yep, that’s about it and it’s proven and well-documented. Yet that doesn’t stop people from buying into the (shouting breathlessly here) GROW-2-INCHES OF HAIR EACH MONTH” advertisements that propagate social media. And they fall for it. Every.Single.Time.

There is no substitute for time and grade, no easy way.  There is only THE way. Take the energy used in looking for a work around and apply it to the work.

IT FORCES YOU TO
REFRAME YOUR GAME

A few years back after my life and career were turned upside down, when people would ask about what was going on, I would say, “UGH! The last 2 years of my life have been HELLACIOUS!” Then one day, someone said, “Rene.. instead of saying they have been hellacious, why not just say challenging?” It made all the difference. Hellacious was this horrid, interminable storm that I was being tossed about in. Challenging was me, struggling yes, but  in control. You see?

 LIFE IS NOT LINEAR

Oh, I wish I had a dollar for every time I told someone this. Everyone thinks the path to success is a straight line, as illustrated above. But it’s not. It looks like this crazy, frenetic, chaotic thing. Along the way you will begin relationships, end relationships and do a lot of course-correcting. Ultimately you will get there, but it’s so not a straight line.

THERE IS LEARNING
IN THE VALLEYS

Road sign warning of "hard work ahead", against panoramic blue sky.

See those words up there? Jot them down on a Post-It note,  place on the side of your computer and repeat daily. Learning doesn’t just happen in a sterile classroom environment when you’re ready; sometimes those lessons come when you least expect them and sometimes when you’re at the lowest place in your life. Looking back on my own journey of the last 6 years, there are things I have learned that I KNOW I would not have learned, had I still had that big TV gig. Go into the valley. Take a pen and paper with you.

More in Career

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
