Life Lessons: Educator’s Edition…
Scott Spizer

Welcome to a special edition of Good Enough Mother Life Lessons! With school well underway in most parts of the country, we thought it would be great to devote some time and space to the people who are so good to our kids.. educators! Hope you enjoy these special Life Lessons and happy school year to teacher, students AND their parents!

Are you happy at the moment?

Happier than I have ever been, not as happy as I hope to be.

If you could go back and say anything to your 16-year-old self now – what would it be?

Don’t take things quite so seriously; relax, it’s a long (we hope) ride.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned this year?

How to clean the carburetor of my lawn mower.

What do you most want to achieve in the next 12 months?

The continued healthy growth – emotionally, spiritually, and physically – of my daughters.

What’s your secret to happiness?

I have no secrets, they’ve all been used 1,000 times over. But I try to seek nature as much as I can. Sunshine, fresh air and nature help me to unwind and clear my mind of clutter

What one ritual or practice keeps you grounded?

Sitting outside beneath a wide open sky. It reminds me how small I am and how insignificant my problems are.

What’s your biggest regret?

Tie: Not having children earlier in life (I was the ripe old age of forty-something), and not giving up football before my second knee injury.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve taught your kid(s)?

To hug.

What bad habit would you most like to change about yourself?

Losing sight of the big picture. I have to remind myself to not become too preoccupied with the small worries and problems in life lest and to remember all I am grateful for.

Aside from motherhood/fatherhood and marriage what are you most proud of in your life?

I’ve tried to treat people well as often as I possibly could. Doing little things for people can make a big difference.

When were you happiest?

Right now. No, now. No, now ….

What ten words best describe you?

I absolutely detest this question and will not answer it (count’em – that’s 10)

What is the best way parents can help you in the coming year?

Get to know me so they know they can trust me.

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
