The GEM Debate:
A-Rod Cheated…What Does It Say
To Our Kids? (POLL)
Let me preface this by saying I am not a baseball fan. That doesn’t mean I don’t like the game but my like revolves more around the atmosphere of the game; peanuts, hot dogs, beer and screaming at the top of your lungs. I don’t follow players or teams, RBIs or wins and losses for that matter. So today’s debate might be a bit out of character for me.
But character is exactly what brings us to this place. Character.. Merriam-Webster describes it, among other things as:
“moral excellence and firmness <a man of sound character>”
My description.. the fiber that makes up your moral being; who you are when no one’s watching.
A-Rod, aka Alex Rodriguez, is in the eye of a swirling storm about performance enhancing drugs. The Yankees third baseman has, in the past admitted taking drugs to increase his performance but has denied doing so since joining the Yankees. He is one of 10 players to be suspended by Major League Baseball.
Now here’s where the debate comes in. A-Rod will be able to appeal his suspension and, during that time, he will be able to play ball. But should he? In fact, should he play ever again?
Okay, here’s the thing. As I said before, I’m not a sports fan. I don’t know what it takes to play at that level. But I do know what it’s like to win at the game of life and I absolutely hate that people are cheating to get there.
But more than that, I think it sends a TERRIBLE message to our kids. Hard work? Who needs it when there’s a chemist with a needle and some elaborate plan for avoiding detection. Level playing field? Nah.. where’s the fun in that? Working to be your best even if your best isn’t THE best? No, win at all cost!
I don’t know where or how this all plays out with A-Rod and others but there’s a part of me that hopes baseball can go back to being less about who wins the game and more about how the game is played!
What say you? Take the poll and leave a comment!
