The “A” List..
11 Things You MUST Do To Protect Your Skin

What suffers most when you’re in flat-out GEM mode and your days are filled with oversleeping and cranky kids, wet wipes down the now-clogged toilet, playdates that end in tears, seemingly endless hours of homework squabbles, crises at work, a partner who’s out of town on business, a dog that pees in the kitchen every time he eats, a modem that conks out just when you need to get online, and a vacuum cleaner with a bag that just exploded?

Your beauty routine.

The same moms who spend countless hours shopping for the best bath-time products, lovingly rubbing cream into their kids’ dry skin, hurriedly slapping the sunscreen on squirming shriekers, and combing out tangles, spend next to no time on their own skincare and beauty needs.

So I want to entice you with some of the best information about some of the best products I can find. I’ve been writing articles about beauty for nearly two decades, and have collaborated on books with some of the best in the business:

*10 Minutes 10 Years with Dr. Fredric Brandt (skincare wizard and Madonna’s dermatologist)

*Unblemished with Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields (who created Proactiv)

*BQ The Beauty Quotient Formula with cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Tornambe

*Makeup Your Mind with makeup marvel Francois Nars

*And several other famous names I’m not allowed to mention!

There are a few gems—otherwise known as the A for Always List–I’ve learned from working with these experts:

ALWAYS WASH
YOUR FACE AT NIGHT

You wouldn’t dream of letting your kids go to bed covered in the grime of the day, so why would you ignore the crud on your own cheeks?

ALWAYS MOISTURIZE YOUR FACE,
EVEN IF YOU HAVE OILY SKINmoisturizer

That’s right, your skin still can be parched even if it tends to oiliness and breakouts. An oil-free moisturizer will give it the hydration it needs without causing more zits.

ALWAYS MOISTURIZE
THE REST OF YOUR BODY TOOl

Especially your long-suffering neck, hands, and feet.

ALWAYS GIVE SKINCARE
PRODUCTS TIME TO WORK

Products with active ingredients need  at least 6-8 weeks to work.

This is one of the best pieces of advice I’ve gotten from the pros. Most people (guilty as charged!) use a new product for a few days or a week or two, see no improvement, get mad that they wasted their money, ditch the product, and try something else. Be patient—6-8 weeks is a long time to wait to see changes, but your skin will thank you in the long run.

ALWAYS USE SUNSCREEN
(UNLESS THERE’S A HURRICANE)sunscreen-1

Most people only need to expose one small bit of your body (like your calves) to the sun for 20 minutes a day to get the Vitamin D they need. Please don’t use that as an excuse to avoid slathering on the goo. Getting melanoma because you didn’t bother with the sunscreen is serious, lethal business.

ALWAYS APPLY SUNSCREEN
AT LEAST 20 MINUTES BEFORE SUN
GOING OUT INTO THE SUN

It takes at least that long to start to become effective. Use a lot. As in a LOT. Those SPF ratings are based on testing done with the proper amount, which can be up to a teaspoon for your face alone. That’s a lot of sunscreen!

ALWAYS GET SKIN EXAMINED
YEARLY BY A DERMATOLOGIST

…and more often if you have a family history of skin cancer or moles. Just as you go to the dentist and the gynecologist for regular checkups, take care of your body’s largest organ. It needs a thorough look-see to assess its condition, especially if you have moles. The best way to gauge any potential problems is when you have baseline photos taken for comparisons.

ALWAYS SEE A DERMATOLOGIST
IF THERE ARE ANY
CHANGES TO YOUR SKINdermatologist

The little black dot you notice could be a bug bite—or it could be cancer. Self-diagnosis can be lethal.

Don’t believe the hype!

Cosmetics companies put out so many new products every year that your head can spin trying to figure out what’s what and if it’s any good. Bear in mind that the large companies often spend way more on marketing than they do on the contents in the expensive jar of glop you just got suckered into buying by a pushy salesperson. Educate yourself about the most effective ingredients, and believe me when I say that higher cost rarely means higher effectiveness in skincare products. It does mean lovelier packaging, but I’d rather spend my money on a less fancy jar and more fantastic contents.

ALWAYS BE HAPPY WHEN YOU
SPLURGE ON A FABULOUS PRODUCT

money

Always be happy with yourself when you splurge on a fabulous product. I could spend days at the perfume counter and I have never regretted spending money on something I love and wear all the time. There are a few categories where I’d buy premium brands over drugstore brands: perfume, foundation, and concentrated serums. And if there is a pricey cream or potion you absolutely love, go ahead and buy it. The more you covet something, the more likely you are to use it!

TO NEW IDEAS

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
