Is Your Grill Ready For Summer?

Now that grilling season has begun, plenty of people are organizing backyard barbeques and potlucks. However, not everyone is as fastidious as they should be about keeping their grill clean and in perfect working order. After all, most people prepare and cook the majority of their meals in their kitchen so the stove and oven get the majority of their cleaning attention. Still, it is important to take the time to properly care for a grill after using it (and after it has cooled down, of course).  Here are 4 quick steps you can take at the start of the season to ensure better grilling!

If it’s been a while since you cleaned your grill, you may need some help getting the job done. If you have an oven with a self-cleaning setting, you can take the grill platform off, place it in your oven, and set your oven to its self-cleaning setting. That’s the easiest method and it allows you to kill (or clean) two birds with one stone.

USE THE BATHTUB

However, if your grill has years of caked-on grime that has been seared into the plate, you will probably need to soak the plate for a while before you can get all of the mess off. Find a bucket or use your bathtub if your grill’s plate won’t fit into the sink. Run warm water into your receptacle of choice, add some liquid dish-washing soap, and then let the grill plate lie in the warm, soapy water for a couple of hours. The soaking should make washing the grill using a steel brush or pad much easier.

CLEAN CONNECTIONS

If you are using a gas grill, you should make certain that all of the connecting tubes are clean, untangled, and not cracked. Also, be careful with the propane tank. Keep it clean and free of rust and keep the valves and knobs clean and well-lubricated.

EMPTY THE PIT

If your grill is a charcoal grill, you should completely empty the charcoal pit when grilling season ends and take some time to clean it thoroughly. This will help you keep the grill functioning at peak efficiency – as well as preventing it from smoking heavily over the years.

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
