Life Lessons:
Candace Derickx

Are you happy at the moment?

Yes. Most definitely.

If you could go back and say anything to your 16-year-old self now – what would it be?

Math is not for losers, smoking is not cool, and you have a fantastic body, stop wearing clothes 5 sizes too big.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned this year?

Sell yourself. No one is going to do it for you.

What do you most want to achieve in the next 12 months?

World peace. However I’ll settle for my kitchen being completed and happy children. I also want to see Europe.

What’s your secret to happiness?

Chips and dip. No? Okay, okay, fine. A sense of humour. That’s spelled in Canadian with the ‘u’ at the end for my American friends. Also, we don’t say aboot.  (rolls eyes)

What one ritual or practice keeps you grounded?

Chips and dip. Really. Also, reading Harry Potter to my children nightly. My oldest is on the fourth book this year and my youngest the first. It’s time spent alone with each of them and that time is sacred.

What’s your biggest regret?

Waiting so long to let my inner confidence come out. What on earth was I waiting for?

What’s the most important lesson you’ve taught your kid(s)?

Two lessons really. That being a woman/girl comes at a price. It is your job to be the change. That other people’s feelings matter. Currently working on what you put out there, comes back to you tenfold. It’s a work in progress.

What bad habit would you most like to change about yourself?

Eek. That’s easy. I wish I had a longer attention span. Squirrel!

Aside from motherhood/fatherhood and marriage what are you most proud of in your life?

My friendships. I have so many wonderful female friends. I consider myself blessed.

When were you happiest?

Right now.

What ten words best describe you?

Tenacious, outgoing, funny, inquisitive, hot-head, stubborn, loyal, caring, happy, in love.

Candace Derickx is a proud Canuck with a sense of humour. Note the ‘u’ in humour, eh?  A wife, mother to two girls, stepmom to a ‘gulp’ University student, and owner of a golden doodle who gets way more attention than the rest of the family.  Probably because she doesn’t tell fart jokes, although she can clear a room!

Candace has created her own little happy place on the web Life in Pleasantville and blogs weekly for the Yummy Mummy Club under See Mummy Juggle.  You can also find her guest posting, Why NO has to mean NO! on Good Enough Mother.
