Life Lessons: Jenilee Goodwin

What an exciting week!  Who is ready for BlogHer12?  Well, Rene is (um, sort of, if she can stop working long enough to shower and tell the kids to “Go ask your father! I’m on my way to BlogHer!”) and we wanted to give you guys a chance to meet the BlogHers here.  Share a few Life Lessons with women who are taking time out this week to broaden their horizons and see what’s new in the blogher-sphere.  So take it away, Jenilee Goodwin!  And thanks for submitting your Life Lessons.  And remember you can email us to submit yours.

Are you happy at the moment?

Happy? Well, that changes with the day, the situation or the moment… but joy? Yes! God has deeply blessed me with family, friends and a life that I rejoice in no matter what the day looks like for me.

If you could go back and say anything to your 16 year old self now – what would it be?

Listen to your mother! She is really so much smarter than you give her credit for. Life really will change and the things that are happening now will be nothing more than a blip in your memory.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned this year?

In 2009, I began having MS-like symptoms. Since that time, I have learned to let go, relax and cherish every moment. The things that used to stress me out or get me worked up no longer have the ability to control my emotions. Living open handed to God and His plan, learning to trust Him and follow His lead, has greatly impacted my life mindset.

What do you most want to achieve in the next 12 months?

Hmmm… 12 months… God is doing some big things in our family and I’m excited to see how God is going to use my blog, my writing, my health and my abilities in ways I can’t even see right now.

What’s your secret to happiness?

My handsome hubby can always make me laugh. My precious girls are a daily blessing. Writing is an outlet I will be forever thankful for… and coffee. Always coffee. Oh, wait… I forgot chocolate!

What one ritual or practice keeps you grounded?

Daily reading God’s Word. The Bible is a book full of wisdom that can truly and surely guide our every step.  Every decision, every circumstance, every challenge can be directed by the Word of God.

What’s your biggest regret?

Words. Words spoken (or written) in anger, disappointment or frustration are words that can never be taken back or forgotten.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve taught your kid(s)?

Follow hard after God. When we keep our eyes on Him, the rest of our life will fall into place.

What bad habit would you most like to change about yourself?

Bad eating/exercise habits! In my health struggles, I’ve cut out gluten and caffeine and diet drinks. I eat more fruits and more veggies and try to make wiser choices. But, really… it is so hard. I want to win this battle with food and build strength from working out. “Eat to live not live to eat…” are wise words from a friend.

Aside from motherhood and marriage what are you most proud of in your life?

My writing. Honestly, I never dreamed I would write but here I am sending out guest posts, writing for an e-magazine and building a blog about my family, my faith and our wonderful adventures together.

When were you happiest?

On our 10th anniversary, we renewed our wedding vows. We planned the day so that we would have pictures of a wedding (all of our pictures were lost) and to let our girls be a part of the experience. But, in the moment of renewing our vows, the pictures didn’t matter and my girls weren’t really all that interested in what we were doing! As we said our vows to each other, I realized that it was a precious, private, poignant day that I will never forget. Hearing the words that my husband had to say to me after 10 years of marriage was incredibly powerful and made me incredibly happy.

What ten words best describe you?

Learning, growing, joyful, faithful, serious, lover of schedules, planner, teacher, writer and book-worm.

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
