Life Lessons: Aqua Nixon

Yay! It’s time to introduce you to another one of our fabulous interns. Aqua Nixon (like Beth, Alexis and Jackie) is really busy these days. She had a baby not that long ago and she care for her family as well as her business,, a line of merchandise for girls of color. I’m so happy she’s helping us out as part of the GEM Marketing team (how, I’ll never know; she must not sleep). Anyway, read more about Aqua and remember, we’d love to have you take part in our Life Lessons exercise. Drop us a line here and we’ll get the questions right out to you!

Are you happy at the moment?

Yes, at this very moment.

If you could go back and say anything to your 16-year-old self now – what would it be?

Follow YOUR dreams. Don’t get distracted, but you don’t have to achieve all of your goals by age 30 (30 is not old). Life is going to get harder but you’ll be okay and you’ll have a lot of fun along the way. You’re a lot stronger than you know. Enjoy every moment of the good times. Time does fly.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned this year?

Sometimes the best things in life come as a surprise.

What do you most want to achieve in the next 12 months?

I want some of the items in our product line to be available at a retail stores. I want to make that happen.

What’s your secret to happiness?

If there is a secret to happiness, I don’t know what it is! I try to focus on the good in my life and be grateful for what I’ve been blessed with; it keeps me from feeling sorry for myself.

What one ritual or practice keeps you grounded?

What’s your biggest regret?

I don’t think I have any regrets. I try to make the best decision I can at the moment. I can live with the outcome.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve taught your kid(s)?

Be yourself & love who you are. Love each other. My kids are young so I have so many more lessons to teach.

What bad habit would you most like to change about yourself?

I have a terrible “sweet tooth.” I’ve stopped drinking soda. I’m cutting down on cookies. That’s saying a lot for me.

Aside from motherhood/fatherhood and marriage what are you most proud of in your life?

Starting my company. It began as just a thought my head and is now a functioning business.

When were you happiest?

It’s funny that I remember being very happy when I was sixteen. I’m happy now. I have a great marriage and three beautiful, healthy children.

What ten words best describe you?

Honest, creative, loyal, strong, witty, confident, determined, smart, easy-going, compassionate

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
