What I Gained By Losing My Breasts

Happy Friday everyone! The kids and I are scrambling to get out of here (did someone say vacation?), headed to one of our favorites places, Disney World! It’s actually going to be a busy time for us, well me, anyway, because along with Disney, I’m taking a trip up to North Carolina to hang with my good friends at Type-A Parent Conference where I’ll be giving the closing keynote address. I can’t wait. I always joke that I’m going to keep my camera rolling so I can work on my documentary, “The Secret Life of Blogging Conferences.”  Some day. Some day.

At any rate, I was thinking the other day that it’s been five years now since I had my preventive mastectomy. I talk about it a lot, as you know but recently have been looking back on that time, not so much with fear but as a place where I really learned and grew as a person. To that end, I wrote about it today for my column on Babble.com.. head over there and take a peek!

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
