Second Acts: Ethan Dreilinger

Hey everybody!

Checking in from 34,000 feet, on my way to a super cool event in Indianapolis (you can read more about that here). My dance card has been filling up lately, with people booking GEM to come speak about the gospel of imperfection. If you’re interested in having me at your event, drop us a line here and someone will get back to you. And it’s time like these I get to showcase some of the great talent that write for the site. If you want to submit an article let us know.

One of the features that we do here that I LOVE is called Second Acts and since I’m in my own, I love to hear from others about theirs.  Ethan Dreilinger is in his. He and I used to work together in TV news like a thousand years ago but times change, people change, priorities change and that’s what prompted Ethan to make a change. Read all about his “Second Act” and if you’re interested in submitting your own, email Ella Rucker at Ella@goodenoughmother.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

WHAT IS YOUR SECOND ACT?

So really I am on my third act.  My second act was migrating from day-to-day TV news and husband to the world of digital media (and caregiver as my wife was getting sicker).  My third act is as an executive in a large company pivoting to digital media and single parent.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU NEEDED A CHANGE OF CAREER OR LIFESTYLE? WHAT WAS YOUR BREAKING POINT?

I am not sure I realized that I needed a change-I am always looking out for new and better-but never set out on change.  I think being able to adapt and handle change though makes act 2 and act 3 easier.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THE CHANGE ?

Plunge right in and a lot of time on Google learning new terms as they came up.

 WAS IT SCARY?

It’s very scary-but it’s also important to realize (at least in my case) these new opportunities were also new opportunities for the people I was with (my family) or working for-so everyone was going through it at once.

WHAT WAS THE TOUGHEST PART OF YOUR SECOND ACT?

Knowing when it was time to start the third act.

WHERE ARE YOU IN YOUR TRANSITION?

I just started act three, about a year in all the way around.

WHERE ARE YOU IN THE LEARNING PROCESS?

Change is inevitable.  It’s a matter of being up front about it and accepting it.

ARE YOU HAPPIER NOW THAN YOU WERE IN YOUR PREVIOUS LIFE?

Generally yes-there is always good and bad, but the good out paces the bad.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR SECOND ACT?

Knowing that there is a third act, and probably a fourth act.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO ANYONE LOOKING TO MAKE A MAJOR LIFE CHANGE?

Don’t be a victim of paralysis by analysis.  Change will happen-either be a change agent or be changed.

WHAT ARE YOU DREAMS AND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE?

That tomorrow is a better day than today.  Really-it’s that simple for me.

With more than ten years of award winning TV, Ethan launched into a career in digital media being part of the team that helped transform the way people consume news and news media. He was the first employee of CBS News Mobile and helped build a profitable division within CBS. Ethan currently works for Verizon, helping to build another new-industry changing digital media product. A single dad of two great girls, in his spare time, Ethan likes to work out and write, with two novels and a semi- biography coming out. Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
