Wow – this is enough to make Good Enough Mother become a vegetarian.

You know what I’m talking about… Check out the picture making lots of headlines at the moment – Lady Gaga wearing a beef bikini on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan.

Now I’m all for expressing creativity and I think Lady Gaga does that better than most. But this just seems, I don’t know, desperate…

First of all, the image isn’t that original – we’ve all seen the ‘meat is murder’ shock look before! And Gaga prides herself on being original… Remember the get-up she wore to meet Queen Elizabeth? Or the giant bow made of hair. Or the outfit made of Kermits she wore to a German TV interview?  There’s no denying it, Gaga knows how to push the envelope and judging by the general reaction to this photo she seems to have hit the mark once again…

But was it a mark worth hitting in the first place?

I have two takes on this. The first is that this whole posing draped in prime rib seems a bit desperate for lack of a better term. I don’t know Gaga outside of her music (and I am an unabashed fan). But part of the thing I liked about her was that she was unique, different, pushing buttons and not apologizing for it. Wearing beef is certainly out of the ordinary but this seems a little like low hanging fruit. All of her other fashion choices seemed organic, like they were really born of that crazy, fertile mind of hers. There’s something about this that makes me feel like this could have been borne in the boardroom.

The other take is perhaps diametrically opposed. As shocking as it is, there are those who would argue this is just a step below wearing leather or fur. It goes without saying, PETA is pissed…

“No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal. Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that’s the look they were going for — they achieved it.”

But seriously, is it a bit hypocritical for people to love the look of fur or lust for a pair of Jimmy Choo boots but to be repulsed by the sight of Gaga wearing meat? Maybe. I can only speak for myself and I wear leather and eat a steak every so often. But there is still something unnerving about this photo to me.

But what do you think? Are you repulsed by this photo? Or think it’s more Gaga media manipulation? Start commenting GEM’s…
