Happy birthday, J.K. Rowling! Good Enough Mother thought long and hard about what to get her for her birthday but as was the case with Marvelous Mother Angelina Jolie, I’m pretty sure they have all they need and what they don’t have they can buy!
Now, neither of my kids have read the Harry Potter series of books or seen the movies but honestly I am beginning to think they are in the minority. Rowling reportedly conceived of the idea while on a train ride from Manchester to London and has since turned the life and times of the boy wizard into a cottage industry.
So hat’s off to Marvelous Mother J.K. Rowling. Here’s why:
SHE REFUSED TO GIVE UP: J. K. Rowling, whose real name is Joanne, finished her first book draft on a manual typewriter, sent it around to 12 publishing houses, each of which rejected the book! In 1997, Rowling finally got a small company to publish Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. As the story goes, it was at the behest of the publisher’s daughter, who after reading the first chapter was anxious to see more.
SHE’S OVERCOME SOME TOUGH STUFF: After taking a job in Portugal teaching English, she met and married a TV presenter Jorge Arantes. She gave birth to their daughter, Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes in July but by October the marriage was over. Rowling moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to be near her sister and while there, was diagnosed with clinical depression. She says that condition as well as the death of her mother, helped her add more texture to the Harry Potter novels.
But her personal life has a happy ending! Rowling married Neil Michael Murray in December 2001 and gave birth to David Gordon Rowling Murray in 2003 and her youngest child, Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray in 2005.
SHE MAKES A TON OF MONEY: And she did it all on her own! The first book in the Harry Potter series she completed while studying postgraduate work so that she could get a teaching job in Scotland. During that time, Rowling was on welfare and did much of her writing in cafes in and around Edinburgh. Now, seven books later each of which has been turned into a movie, Rowling is listed as the 1062nd richest person in the world! She’s the second richest female entertainer and Forbes has declared her to be the first person to become a US billionaire by writing books.
SHE GIVES A TON OF MONEY AWAY: It’s one thing to make a lot of money but what you do with it says so much about who you are. Rowling, who lost her mother to Multiple Sclerosis, donates money for research and treatment, important as Scotland has the highest rate of MS in the world. But she also remembers and identifies with the plight of single parents. The author is president of One Parent Families, which advocates on behalf of single parent families. To date she has helped raise millions for that organization.
So hats off to author/philanthropist J.K. Rowling, the woman who gave birth to Harry Potter – 400 million copies, 67 different languages – and counting! We can’t wait to see what comes next!
