THOUGHTS BECOME THINGS. MAKE THEM MATTER@GoodEnoughMother-2Monday Motivation: Struggling?
The One Thing You Need To Do Right Now!

Hey all Happy Monday!

I emailed a friend about business the other day and when the official part was over, the conversation turned to life in general.

“How are you doing?” I asked my friend.

“Okay.. well struggling actually”

I listened as she went on to detail how difficult the last couple of months had been for her and her family.

I get it.

I totally get it.

For some reason so many of my friends seem to be struggling and I don’t mean the occasional bump-in-the road type of struggles either. I’m talking illness, death, divorce, prolonged illness and so on. For so many of my friends, it’s a bad case of the universe piling on and it doesn’t look like it’s letting up any time soon.

I know that feeling.

Almost a decade ago my nice, neat little word, the one I had carefully cultivated and worked hard for, began to unravel.

And it just continued.

In the midst of that maelstrom, I remember talking to a colleague about how AWFUL things were.

And DREADFUL.

And HORRIBLE!

My colleague turned to me and said, “You know Rene, I get that this has been a particularly rough time for you. But you need to be more positive. You need to watch your thoughts and words.”

What my friend was trying to get across is that so much of life, good and bad, is about how to frame it.

He said, ” Instead of saying things are terrible, awful, horrible.. why not just say, ‘It’s been challenging’. ”

He was right, you know.

Changing the verbiage also changed the control. Horrible, terrible awful were things that were happening TO me; challenges were something I was up for; something that could be overcome and would be.

So for my friend and everyone else suffering or struggling, I offer the same bit of advice that was given me: we know it’s hard. We know it’s tough. We know it sucks.

But you can change the trajectory simply by changing the language.

Try it. You may be surprised.

That’s today’s Monday Motivation. What about you? What’s the one thing you do to keep going when it seems like everything is falling apart?
