Moms Must Read:
7 Chillers and Thrillers For the Whole Family

Thrillers! These are the books you love to hate, right? Or maybe you’re scared to read them? Either way I bet there’s one thriller you’ve read that has changed the way you read.

What exactly is a thriller? A thriller moves quickly, contains lots of action, and must try to figure out what the bad guys are doing and stop them. The bad guys are usually really despicable creatures committing pretty heinous crimes. You’re scared all the time while reading thrillers. You jump at the slightest sound. You sleep with the light on. Yep. That’s a thriller.

If you don’t know by now, I’m a scaredy cat. I don’t like being scared too often, but every once in a while I drop what I normally read and get lost in a thriller. My first thriller? The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I hated it. I had nightmares for days. Many years later I tried another thriller: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

Nowadays, I’m into legal thrillers, my fave being anything that Lisa Scottoline writes. She’s so good that just when I think I’ve got the crime all figured out, I’m wrong. How does she do it? If you can’t stay away from thrillers either, here are a few titles that will keep your heart racing.

1. I, Ripper by Stephen Hunter

Here’s one for Dad. Perhaps Dad would like to read about the  seedy London underbelly of the 1880s? Why did Jack the Ripper do what he did? What’s the story behind the horrific killer?

I, Ripper is a vivid reimagining of Jack’s personal story entwined with that of an Irish journalist who covered the case, knew the principals, charted the investigation, and at last, stymied, went off in a bold new direction. These two men stalk each other through a city twisted in fear of the madman’s blade, a cat-and-mouse game that brings to life the sounds and smells of the fleshpot tenderloin of Whitechapel and all the lurid acts that fueled the Ripper headlines.

This page turner should keep Dad occupied into the wee hours of the night.
