Life Lessons:
Lana Hanson

*Are you happy at the moment?

I am happy when I decide to be- it is all in attitude, in the conscious decision to be grateful, to be strong and to honor the self.

*If you could go back and say anything to your 16-year-old self now – what would it be?

“Close your legs, girl. There’s always time for that. Educate your brain right now.”

*What’s the most important thing you’ve learned this year?

I have learned I deserve what I want. I can put myslef first. To truly honor oneself and to live out the stories of our dreams, we MUST take risks and stay true to our goals. WORK the spirit and don’t allow worry to bully you.

*What do you most want to achieve in the next 12 months?

I have many goals to keep me moving and shaking! I aim to turn writing into a career, publish more of my poetry and other writing, grow in my spirituality and become a leader in non-profits directed at holistic living, relationship strengthening, women’s empowerment and assistance at all crossroads in life.

*What’s your secret to happiness?

There is no secret to happiness, no magic pill. Work your spirit, work your happiness, work for what you want. Happiness is subjective. Attitude is everything. Live with a grateful spirit.

*What one ritual or practice keeps you grounded?

I meditate nightly in my backyard. I feel it is a spiritually charged place. I stand in the humming vibration of nature, offer things to the spirit world, lift my hands and set my intentions. I breathe in and out. I smile. I say “Thank you.” That is the truest, most profound prayer.

*What’s your biggest regret?

I had to euthanise my beloved 12 year old black lab due to divorce a few years back. She was my best friend- my only friend for quite a while. Sarah had deteriorating health, but I have always wondered if she could have lived a couple more years. Never euthanise a pet alone. Take someone with you. For me, this was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life.

*What’s the most important lesson you’ve taught your kid(s)?

I could boast all day about the lessons I have taught my kids but here is the absolute truth: My children have taught ME. They taught me what kind of mother to be, how to be a voice for the voiceless, to stay true to oneself and most importantly, how to always respect the spirit of the individual.

*What bad habit would you most like to change about yourself?

I can be very rude with my words. I am a proud woman and I know the power of language. I use both as my weapons when needed.

*Aside from motherhood/fatherhood and marriage what are you most proud of in your life?

I am proud that I have lost, yet found my identity. That is a gift, you know- to keep hold of your self- your head, your heart. Don’t trash that gift. Hold tight to YOU. Many factors of the spirit world work in concert just for you to be here and to be simply- YOU.

*When were you happiest?

I am happiest when I am of service to others, when their spirit rises up, when words cannot fail them and health, healing, community, strength and gladness remind them of why this world needs them so very much.

*What ten words best describe you?

Compassionate, lively, supportive, funny, proud, spiritual, leader, poetic, womanly, foul-mouthed.

Lana Hanson has no college degree and as yet no awards or “touring poet” accolades. She’s blessed to run a brush through multiplying grey head-hairs, to feel crows’ feet deepening grooves around her eyes. She’s finally started to admire herself. She aims to help women rise up and repair their spirits.

Born in Flint, MI, Lana Hanson now lives in Las Vegas, NV, with her two sardonic teenage sons, an old, part Corgi rescue mutt, four perpetually vomiting cats and a 72-year-old boy-toy. You can find some of Lana’s poetry work at thehypertexts.com.
