How To Stretch Your Natural Curly Hair

It’s not often I write blogs about my natural hair; I tend to leave that stuff for my Instagram. But I had an experience the other day at Devachan, a salon that specializes in curly hair, I just had to share.  First, a bit of back story.

As some of you know, I decided to rock my natural hair about 5 years ago after my hair broke off and fell out after years of over-processing. My daughter Casey, is my natural hair role model; I can remember looking at her hair and thinking, “She had to get that from SOMEONE and I carried her for 9 months. Maybe it was me?!” Anyway, I cut the last of the chemicals out of my hair in March 2009 and haven’t looked back.

Wearing my natural hair has been a wonderful journey of self-discovery but it’s also been something of a moving target. There is not a week that god by that I don’t learn something new about my hair. Recently, it was a styling tip.

I have been getting my hair cut and colored at Devachan Salon. But lately, my travel schedule with Sweet Retreats and Exhale has kept me out of the chair. So when I got back there the other day, my ends were in pretty bad shape, not to mention the color. Side note: in the cruelest twist of fate, my colorist was on vacation so while we snipped away the dead ends, the gray is still there.. taunting me.

I also discovered that my regular stylist was no longer with the company so a new guy took care of my locks and just when I thought I knew all there was to know about my natural hair, I learned a little trick about making my curls look longer!

This is my typical hairstyle. Hard part in the center with a bit of a shaggy look. This is 3rd day hair that I tied back at night and shook out the next day.

Rene, I wonder if you remember me? Funny, we’ve been on a similar hair journey. I too gave up processing my hair and went natural too (life after television). Our hair is BEAUTIFUL! What were we thinking? Now as an Exercise Entertainer/instructor going natural is easier to manage. I also avoid shampoo. I’m going to try your hair stretch tip. Thanks and good luck. Love your posts!

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer’s day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.
