Ask Rene: Dress Code Dilemma..
Now My Kid’s Shorts Are TOO Short?
My daughter just started middle school as a 6th grader. There is a pretty strict dress code at her school with regard to the length of shorts. The school requires that when students are standing straight with arms to their sides, their shorts should be NO shorter than the ends of their fingertips.
Charlotte wore a pair of baggy denim shorts a couple of days ago and none of her teachers said a word about their length. Today, I got a call just after the school day began, that her homeroom teacher felt that her shorts were too short and I needed to bring her a longer pair. She’d been out of class sitting in the office until I got there. When I arrived, I had her put her arms down and the shorts were exactly at the end of her fingertips; which is exactly where the dress code says they need to be. So…sort of a judgement call in my opinion.
I was a bit annoyed because, again, she wore the same ones two days ago. I see girls that are practically falling out of their tops at school and I wonder why such a focus on a little bit of thigh showing in class. It’s HOT where we live and I feel like the only option we have are capris which my daughter isn’t particularly fond of. Do you have any suggestions for us?

Hmm.. an interesting dilemma and I’m guessing you’re not the first to go through something like this. I think you hit the nail on the head in your letter; so much of it IS a judgment call. The ultimate question is how to keep this from happening again? Here are a few ideas..
