Hey everyone! Happy start of the work week!
I’m waking up in San Francisco, California, which is close to my hometown of Sacramento. We’re here taping several episodes of Sweet Retreats and as I mentioned last week, the kids are with me so it’s going to be a bit of a working vacation. You can follow our travels (and arguments.. kidding. Sort of. Not really) on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates and like the Sweet Retreats Facebook Page too!
A few weeks ago, we were shooting in a place that I honestly had never heard of before; The Thousand Islands in upstate New York. How upstate? Well, imagine the look on my face when, on the drive when I saw a road sign that said we were a mere 25 miles from Canada. So .. there you go.
The Thousand Islands is a really cool area, made up of more than 1800 islands, some large, others very small with just one house on them; some of them are too small to even put a house on them. One of them, an island (more like a huge rock), is the star of today’s Monday Morning Motivation.
So.. the week were were taping happened to be one of the hottest in recent memory; yes, I had to use a blow dryer to cool off between takes!
And then someone suggested it… Why not take the leap off of Devil’s Oven?
Huh? Wha…? Devil’s Oven? Jump off THAT?
Devil’s Oven is a small island upriver from Cherry Island; someone suggested we do what the locals do.. take a boat ride over to it, scramble up and jump off. Though scared to death, I agreed to do it.
When I posted the photos on Facebook, my sister, Tracy Syler-Jones, said the series of photos reminded her of what I had been through in my life the last several years and she thought others could learn from them.
Interesting.. I hadn’t even thought of it that way; maybe because from where I stood (and jumped off) I was just plain terrified. But I did it anyway. And you know something.. she was right. From the paralysis of being fired, to marshaling courage and friends, to taking big chances and ultimately succeeding, photos of the jump are a perfect representation of what so many of us go through when life throws us a curve-ball.
Take a peek for yourself.
