The GEM Review: Superbowl Ads 2013…
What’s Your Favorite? (VIDEO)

It’s here!  It’s here!  Not the game, silly. We’re talking about the REAL competition.. the commercials! Yes, for some of us, the outcome of the actual game between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49′ers is what makes the day exciting, but for others the ads are the star of the show. And as seems to be the trend in our digital lives, the fun is coming to us a little faster via the Internet.  So we’ve rounded up a few of the ads that caught our eye and of course we’re going to share!

GODADDY.COM

These guys have always been about in your face advertising.  Looks like they are staying on brand this year with this Bar Refaeli kiss.

TACO BELL

I LOVE IT.  I so want to be these people waaaaay down the line.  Heck.  As a new mom I think I’m jealous of the fun now.

THE ALL-NEW MERCEDES-BENZ CLA

So, yeah.  Sex sells.  But just like The Mercedes Benz CLA, this commercial keeps it crazy classy.

BECK’S SAPPHIRE

I’ve seen super sexy.  Super, sexy, singing fish now that’s something I haven’t seen.  (Special props for remaking a song I loved in my high school days.)

AXE APOLLO

This commercial is really cute because it reminds me of the head GEM’s daily updates on Facebook about her teen, Cole, and his Axe obsession.  I think Axe is hitting its target market (and their moms).

VOLKSWAGEN

This commercial kind of met with a little controversy.  It challenges our acceptance of stereotypes as funny and it makes us realize that some stereotypes just aren’t true.  White man from Minnesota with a Jamaican accent?  Hummm… I say, “Bravo” Volkswagen.  You got us talking about your car and real issues.  Advertising at its best.

DORITOS

Cute dog versus cute kid in an epic battle.  Yes!  Doritos may have clinched it.  They’ve also got a father-daughter commercial and one featuring a Doritos eating goat you might want to look for as you are watching the game tonight.

BUDWEISER

Now these people know how to build a brand.  I can barely see a Clydesdale without crying.  No, this teaser doesn’t have the famed horses, but you just know Budweiser has got something up their sleeve.

PEPSI NEXT

Who doesn’t want to go to the epic party?  I love this commercial especially when she asks them, “Beginner pole vaulting or beginner reading.”  That’s epic.

So what’s your favorite so far?  The trend I’m seeing is that if there is one commercial out there for any brand there is usually more.  Let us know what other commercials are tickling your fancy (or completely turning you off) before the big game in the comments.  Go Niners! Or Ravens…

Ella Rucker Headshot Disney

Ella Rucker is the mother of one of the smartest, funniest two-year-olds she’s ever met.  She is currently assistant to the head GEM which means hats-a-plenty including writing, editing, and producing for Good Enough Mother.  An Ohio native implanted in NYC for the last 13 years, Ella has achieved one of her many dreams by writing.  Her musings (she’s amused they’d be called “musings”) can be found at other places on the web so make sure you follow her on twitter @ellalaverne for all the information.
