Thanksgiving Good Enough Mother Style:
Which Of These Is OFF LIMITS At The Table? (POLL)

Can you smell the bird baking? Or frying?  Or roasting?  Yes!  Thanksgiving is getting closer and we are still doing it Good Enough Mother style.  Has anyone ever pondered why the election season and the holidays are so close together?  I mean you just mended some pretty torn fences with people and now you have to eat a meal with them and talk.  There’s small talk, of course, but wouldn’t you like your repartee to be as meaty as the turkey (and, no, “turkey” is in no way referencing your cousin who doesn’t share your religion).

So in true GEM fashion we present you with 8 topics of conversation you may want to avoid on Thursday.  (Don’t forget to take the poll at the end.)

RELATIONSHIPS

We’ve all had a couple of doozies when it comes to the loves of our lives.  If one of your relatives shows up with someone you just know is going to make the gag reel next year, shut your trap. Now is not the time for an intervention.

POLITICS

When people lived in tiny houses, on huge farms, with just their families to keep them informed and entertained, life sure was sweet.  Your politics were your family’s politics.  No discussion.  No knock out, drag down, Facebook meme brawl that leads to unfriending. Yep.. pretty simple… back then.

SEX

No. No, no, no!  I don’t think this is an issue that you bring up at the dinner table, but just in case you have a conversation broiling that might rear it’s ugly head, please feel free to grab a turkey leg, count to ten, and turn on the football game – quickly!

SCHOOL

It’s the first time your college student is home from school, and you want to catch up on all of their new endeavors.  Well, you might want to wait until your food is fully digested because there’s no telling what “adult” thing they have in store for you.

FASHION

You wouldn’t think it, but there are times when the wrong clothes on the right person can cause quite the stir.  If you think “Old Cousin Betty” wearing a mini is a bit too much, you might want to wait to whisper it.  You know.  Just in case it becomes a topic of conversation.

CAREER ADVICE

Let’s face it. There may be a few coming to dinner who are unemployed, under-employed, or rolling around in the green stuff.  I don’t know.  I do know that, “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions”. You can offer tips on where to find a job, just don’t tell them today of all days, why they aren’t finding one.

RELIGION

Um. I think we all know this hot-button nugget is the reason we come together to give thanks, but if ever there was a topic not to discuss when you are trying to keep the peace this is it.

Ella Rucker is a mother of a two-year-old girl and the guardian of two boys. She is currently working on dispelling the myth that being a “stay at home mom” has anything to do with staying at home. Ella moved from Ohio to New York City twelve years ago where she is currently assisting the head GEM and proving that sticking your neck out just might help you win the race. She loves to read about the “mental laws” and seeing them work in her life, but her greatest joy is laughing madly and wildly with her daughter who amazes her everyday.
