GEM On The Go!
Disney On Ice – Rockin’ Ever After

Such a weekend!  Well, first you have to know that Disney on anything – TV, landthe sea - is always a great experience.  That’s why I was so excited when Hallmark gave Rene tickets to see Disney On Ice in New York. As I have the toddler on the payroll who is working for her weight in chicken nuggets, I was gifted the tickets and get to write the corresponding post until said toddler masters her A, B, C’s.

Of course, it rocked!  Mickey and Minnie Mouse emceed the event which featured four of Disney’s most popular movies. Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Brave, and Tangled.  The thing that struck me the most was how they told timeless tales in a different way. They stayed true to a lot of the story and even the dialogue, but I appreciated the effort of reweaving the tales to give the audience a full story with all of the favorite songs with a few surprises.

Here’s a few of the other surprises I found on and off the ice.

MY NEW ‘TUDE

Have you ever had the occasion to have someone you know is wonderful in your orb, but never really get to hang out with them?  At the last minute, I reached out to a former daycare mate of Joelle’s and his mom and invited them to come with us. I got such an emphatic, “Yes!” that I wished I had called earlier. I’m going to stop assuming people don’t want to go out of their way for great entertainment. Another thing I learned from Ms. Darshell?  You can go to an event with your children and look stunning.  Darn it.   My mommy myth busted.

MY MULTI-FACETED DAUGHTER

Joelle recently learned the word “princess” or maybe she always knew it and just pulled it out when it became convenient, I don’t know. I do know that she loves her princess table, her princess book, and oh, yeah, her Tinkerbell costume (she thinks Tink is a princess).  So when she got her little pink princess cup at the show I thought we’d hit Disney/kids-at-an-arena-event gold.  Nope.  She wanted Chauncey’s Flounder mug.  No gender labels for this little one.  So we got her a Flounder (from The Little Mermaid) hat with her cotton candy and she and he have been inseparable.

I NEED TO CRANK UP THE CLASSIC DISNEY

There was a time in my life when I had a pile of Disney movies a mile high.  Not anymore.  I can’t wait to introduce Joelle to my favorites.  She loved Belle from Beauty and the Beast and Ariel from The Little Mermaid so much during the show I felt like she might be “Disney deficient”.

DISNEY KNOWS “ROCKIN”

I know this isn’t the best picture, but it is hard to scrape your feet off the floor, watch your child in amazement, and balance a purse and a bag in your lap all while searching for the phone app on your locked smartphone.  I did my best to capture the wonder that was there, but really, there’s no amount of still pictures or words that will ever bring you as close to the rockin’ afternoon we had. This scene is from Tangled; you can make out the lanterns on the ceiling.  Yes, they raised lanterns on ice!  They even had the underwater jam session for The Little Mermaid complete with glow in the dark sea creatures (because it’s dark under the sea…details, people).

Disney On Ice – Rockin’ Ever After was one of the many ventures of the Disney franchise. They do all of them well with great thought to every aspect of what you are going to see and experience. Oh, and fun fact: They are the largest employers of professional ice skaters.  If you get a chance to take your kids to see this incredible show I say, “Go!”  They will thank you and you will thank you.
