Welcome to the place where imperfection RULES! I just wanted to throw out this personal greeting for those of you who saw me on The Doctors today and have been streaming over to GEM to learn a little more. I’m out west on some business (which includes taping The Doctors again) but I wanted to roll out the red carpet for you today, so welcome!
For many years I was a broadcast journalist, most recently with CBS’ The Early Show. In 2006, two weeks before I was to have a preventive mastectomy, my bosses called me in and fired me; hey, it happens but the timing could not have been worse. I am the daughter of two breast cancer survivors and was due to have a preventive mastectomy just a few weeks after they pulled the trigger. I lost my job, my breasts, my hair (that’s a whole different story) but in losing all those things, found who I was and what I was supposed to be doing.
Goodenoughmother.com was borne of my book of the same name which was my missive on modern motherhood. I had so many friends and neighbors who were killing themselves, trying to provide this perfect childhood for their kids when it dawned on me; we didn’t have perfect childhoods and somehow we turned out okay. Hence the book and brand. I started laying the groundwork in late 2005 and with the help of some key people, have turned it into what it is today. We talk a lot about reinvention, spiky topics (parenting and others), health and fitness and a little bit of beauty too (as long as it’s easy).
Oh, this is so NOT lazy parenting, not even a little bit. The message is that we are human, we will make mistakes, we will disappoint others at times and sometimes those others will be our own family members. But we have a right, no RESPONSIBILITY to be as good to ourselves as we are to all those other people. Good Enough Mother (GEM for short) is about knowing what to worry about and recognizing what should wash off in the shower.
Now that you’re here, we’d love to have you stick around because we have a few really exciting things in the works. We’re working with LXTV to cast our own Good Enough Mother show. I’m going to be on the road quite a bit more as I just got word I’m doing another show (more on that later) and I may be taping more episodes of The Doctors; they’re so awesome (and yes, Travis is as dreamy in person as he is on TV).
Check us out on Facebook and follow on Twitter, Pinterest, Foursquare and Instagram (can you tell I’m totally diggin’ this social media stuff?) I hope you enjoy the content we have up for October as we tell the stories of breast cancer survivors. I’m back east next week and we’ll resume a more routine schedule of postings. In the meantime, thanks for stopping by and for your support!
