Chicago Women: Want To Be On The Front Lines In The Breast Cancer Fight? Here’s How!

By: Beth Bellor and Rene Syler

Remember when I told you about the innovative program at the Komen IU Cancer Center in Indianapolis where women can donate HEALTHY breast tissue for scientists to examine? It’s a great idea because it lets them compare healthy tissue to that which is diseased in hopes of unlocking some of the secrets at the cellular level. But one of the challenges has been that the Komen IU Tissue Bank was the only place women could go to donate healthy breast tissue.

That all changes next weekend.

The Komen Tissue Bank is hittin’ the road for only the second time; next stop CHICAGO!

“The majority of women who have donated have some personal connection to breast cancer,” said Anna Maria Storniolo, M.D., principal investigator of the tissue bank and a physician/researcher at the IU Simon Cancer Center. “They donate because their mother, neighbor, or friend had breast cancer. They feel so helpless. They’re frustrated because they can’t do enough. When the opportunity comes up to donate, they jump at the chance.”

The center is the first and only healthy breast tissue bank in the world, and more than 2,800 women have contributed samples.

So here’s what you need to know:

WHAT: Komen Tissue Bank Donation Collection

WHEN: Saturday, Sept 29th, 2012

TIME: 8:15 am-1:30 PM

WHERE: Stroger Hospital in Downtown Chicago

HOW TO SIGN UP: Go to www.komentissuebank.iu.edu, call (866) 763-0047 or email  eswells@iupui.edu.

WHY: Because we want to see a world without breast cancer and we need your help!

Researchers need breast tissue from all women but there is a big need for women of color, who are diagnosed less yet die more from the disease. But bottom line, they’re looking for boobs of all shapes, sizes and from all people (my words, not theirs).

So let’s have some fun for a good cause. Tweet or Instagram (goodenoughmother) a photo of yourself at the event (you can keep the girls under wraps), telling me why you are inspired to donate. We’ll put them all together in a big, sloppy, wet kiss, thank you post.

And thanks.. in advance!
