Oh come on now! So apparently Solange Knowles, younger sister of Beyonce, was interviewed in Essence magazine recently, talking about all sorts of things. When a part of that was excerpted on Curlynikki.com, the comment thread took something of a nasty turn, with a number of people commenting on her hair, calling it dry and shapeless, just to name a few.
You guys know I’ve been down that path before so I can definitely relate to Solange. For more, hop on over to my column at Babble.com.

Sooooo can relate to this right now. My going curly natural is killing me. My hair is in the crazy did you really come out of the house like that stage. Want a flat iorn so bad but imma stick it out or try to this summer. WISH ME LUCK
I have yet to got to a hair salon where I was not encouraged to chemically straighten my hair. I won’t do it. Why ask? I would’ve done it if I wanted to!!
Natural means no chemicals to me, it doesn’t
mean no heat. Sometimes I like my natural curls, others times I like it straight. All without chemicals.
I cut my hair to the natural waves. It look good in the 80 and look real good now. I do believe if I had to be on something and could not keep my hair in order I would put on my best natural hair wig. People still judge a person by thier hair and shoes. She could have done better. Done they airbrush photo?
As a straight Black man with hair it’s important to point out that I, love natural hair. For me it speaks volumes (no pun intended) of what a person thinks of themselves. To clarify not that those with weaves, chemicals and heat straightened hair are not good intelligent folk. For me when I encounter a Black woman who is proud of her self from her toes to her beautiful hair. I am just honestly floored.Floored by the the sheer amazing beauty and strength I am witnessing. Often times some of the most “together” women are often enslaved to the straight look. Even my fair complected Latina friends with curly hair all want straight hair. (Brazilian blowout) Like most African Americans somewhere down the line I have some non-African descendants. I have been told that I have “good” hair because my hair is very soft and curly. In truth yes it is very curly for someone who is Black that is not Bi-racial. But when you are a seven year old kid and all you want is a big afro like the Jackson 5. Lets just say those school photos were comically sad! We have beautiful hair. Kinky, nappy, curly, braided, loc’d just beautiful. To note not all brothers sporting the bald head are losing their hair! They just don’t know what to do with it! Most Barbershops know only a few styles to cut in!!! Like I said to Ms. Syler the baseball cap is the male equivalent to a weave or wig nowadays for black men. Love all of your self.
